Discover the Transformative Journey: How a Travel Reset Can Change Your Life
Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Heather Markel, an intriguing individual who describes herself as a “Travel Reset Catalyst.” Heather’s journey is one of self-discovery and empowerment through travel. As a full-time solo traveler, Heather took time to share her insights with me on how travel can be a transformative experience and how she helps others embrace traveling with intention and purpose.
In the summer of 1986, Heather’s life took an unexpected turn when she found herself living with a host family in France. This was a considerable shift for a New Yorker who was an only child. Suddenly, she was part of a bustling household with eight children and living on a farm. What might have been a daunting experience instead became life-changing. Heather fell in love with the French language and cultural immersion, marking the beginning of her passion for travelling.
Her career seemed to align perfectly with her interests in other cultures. Over time, however, her professional path took a turn, leading her to a corporate job with AT&T after mergers and acquisitions played their part. Though she was earning a stable income and held a secure position, Heather felt a growing dissatisfaction. Her personal life was equally unsettling; Heather found herself in an ill-fitting marriage, adding to the unravelling of her true self amid a corporate existence where her linguistic skills were underutilized.
While Heather took regular vacations as an escape, these trips always ended with a return to the life that was making her deeply unhappy. After a divorce and years of trying to find fulfillment through various personal development avenues—such as therapy and coaching certifications—an eventual realization hit. She was more committed to societal expectations and responsibilities than to her true desires and needs. The emotional distress from this disconnect began manifesting as physical pain, prompting her decisive move to leave her job and embark on what she thought would be a six-month career break. This decision extended into nearly a decade of full-time travel.
The transformation Heather experienced was profound. Travel shifted from being an escape to becoming a medium through which she found and reshaped herself. Her journey was like an adult vision quest, where the freedom of solo travel allowed her to face and abandon the dramas she had carried from home. With these experiences came the recognition that she had the power to change her narrative, illustrating the diverse choices life offers beyond the binary.
Travelling solo has also taught Heather invaluable lessons in resilience and adaptability. From navigating South America by bus for six months to facing the uncertainties of crossing country borders—such as the time she walked between Costa Rica and Nicaragua—the unpredictability and challenges of travel honed her resourcefulness. Her resilience was further tested during an extended stay in New Zealand, where the COVID-19 pandemic left her without familiar company.
Throughout her journeys, Heather has visited 45 countries across six continents. Among these experiences, Easter Island, South Africa, Mauritius, and Vietnam stand out, offering rich encounters with diverse cultures and environments. By stepping out of the conventional rat race, Heather also re-evaluated her understanding of success, aligning it more with personal growth and happiness than career milestones.
But what is a “Travel Reset” exactly, as Heather describes it? Unlike a typical vacation, which seeks temporary escape and relaxation, a Travel Reset involves extended travel with the intent to rediscover oneself and one’s life purpose. It’s about venturing into the unfamiliar for as long as necessary to truly unwind and recalibrate one’s life, turning passive dreams into actionable plans. Unlike vacations, which often lead people back to unchanged routines, a Travel Reset encourages a deep disconnect from one’s known life, fostering realignment with one’s true self.
Heather’s work involves guiding clients from feeling stuck to embracing lives that resonate with who they are. She assists them in setting goals for their Travel Reset, helps them choose suitable destinations, and supports them in applying travel-learned insights upon returning home. Her approach is tailored to help individuals conquer the logistical hurdles of extended travel, providing both the support and encouragement needed to embark on what is often a transformative journey.
Heather’s story is a testament to the life-changing potential of travel, especially for solo travelers seeking more meaningful connections with themselves and the world. As Heather emphasizes, the power of travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about discovering new perspectives and cultivating a way of life that is more aligned with one’s true self.
