Peljesac Island

I’ve always believed that the best travel stories are written on the road, not on a schedule. But sometimes, a single day is all you have to capture the essence of a place.

And let me tell you, a day on the Pelješac peninsula is a day well spent. This isn’t just another travel guide; this is a story of my own 24-hour love affair with Croatia’s second-largest peninsula, a rugged finger of land pointing out into the sparkling Adriatic.

For years, Pelješac felt like a secret whispered among sailors and wine lovers. Tucked away in southern Dalmatia, it was a bit of a trek to get to, involving a ferry or a detour through Bosnia and Herzegovina.

But all that changed in the summer of 2022. Suddenly, the magnificent Pelješac Bridge, a 2.4-kilometre marvel of engineering built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, stitched the peninsula directly to the Croatian mainland.

The journey was transformed, and Pelješac was opened up to the world in a way it never had been before. This guide is for anyone looking to experience the best of Pelješac in one day, a perfect 2025 itinerary based on my own recent adventure.

The Grand Arrival: Crossing the Pelješac Bridge

My day began with a drive that felt like a cinematic experience. Approaching the Pelješac Bridge is a moment in itself.

It rises out of the sea, a graceful white curve against the blue of the Adriatic. The best way to experience Pelješac is by car, and this bridge makes it a seamless and breathtaking journey, especially during the summer months.

On either side of the bridge, there are beautiful viewpoints. I just had to pull over.

The view of the bridge stretching across the water, with the green hills of the peninsula in the distance, is simply stunning. It’s one of those moments where you just have to stop and take a picture, to try and capture a memory that a camera can never truly do justice.

Once on the peninsula, I headed straight for Orebić, the largest town on Pelješac. A stroll along the seaside promenade is a must.

The salty air, the sound of the waves, and the view of the crystal-clear water are instantly calming. Orebić has a long and proud maritime history, and you can feel it in the air.

The grand old captains’ houses that line the waterfront are a testament to a time when this was a bustling hub of seafaring trade. I grabbed a coffee at a local café, watching the boats bobbing in the harbour and the island of Korčula shimmering just across the channel.

It was the perfect start to my Pelješac adventure.

A Journey into the Past: Donja Nakovana and a View to Italy

After a relaxing morning in Orebić, I decided to delve into the heart of the peninsula. My destination was Donja Nakovana, an ancient, abandoned village that feels like a step back in time.

The drive itself is an adventure, with winding roads that offer ever-more-spectacular views. I stopped at a viewpoint along the way that took my breath away.

From there, I could see the islands of Korčula and Hvar, and the smaller islands scattered around them like jewels on a velvet cloth. The locals say that on a clear day, you can even see the coast of Italy in the distance.

I wasn’t that lucky, but the view was still one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.

Donja Nakovana itself is a hauntingly beautiful place. The stone houses are now ruins, but you can still feel the echoes of the lives that were lived here.

It’s a place for quiet contemplation, for imagining the stories that these old stones could tell. As I wandered through the deserted streets, I couldn’t help but think about the families who once called this place home.

Speaking of families and homes, I have to share a personal story. Just outside Orebić is Camp Nevio.

I know the family who runs it from years ago, when we used to ski together in Kupres. They are a wonderful family who went through a terrible tragedy.

Despite everything, they kept the camp going, and after 15 years, I finally had the chance to visit. We were camping with a tent, so we rented a plot, but if you prefer a bit more luxury, they have mobile homes too.

It’s a place that caters to everyone, from those who want to be close to nature in a tent to those who prefer the comfort of a modern mobile home. The camp has a beautiful beach and a café, so you can spend the whole day swimming and relaxing by the sea.

It was a truly special experience to reconnect with this family and to see how they have created such a wonderful place for people to enjoy.

Sunset Swims and a Taste of the Sea in Lovište

After my visit to Donja Nakovana, I continued on to Lovište, a charming fishing village at the very tip of the peninsula. It’s a place of tranquil beauty, with a lovely beach and a handful of excellent restaurants.

I went for a swim in the crystal-clear water as the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

Beach on Loviste

It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

For dinner, I chose a restaurant right by the sea. Pelješac is famous for its fresh seafood, and I couldn’t resist ordering the squid.

It was cooked to perfection, so tender it practically melted in my mouth. As I ate, I watched the fishing boats returning to the harbour, their nets full of the day’s catch.

It was a simple, yet perfect, moment.

Windsurfing Paradise: The Thrill of the Channel

Pelješac is also a world-renowned destination for windsurfing. The Pelješac Channel, which separates the peninsula from the island of Korčula, is a natural wind tunnel, creating perfect conditions for the sport.

The town of Viganj is the epicentre of the windsurfing scene, and it has hosted numerous world and European championships. Even if you’re not a windsurfer yourself, it’s a thrilling spectacle to watch.

You can sit by the sea with a cold drink and watch the colourful sails zipping across the water, the surfers performing incredible acrobatics. It’s a display of skill and athleticism that is truly mesmerising.

Is One Day in Pelješac Enough?

So, is one day in Pelješac enough? To truly explore every nook and cranny of this incredible peninsula, you would need a lifetime.

But in one day, you can get a taste of its magic. You can experience the thrill of driving over the magnificent bridge, the charm of Orebić, the history of Donja Nakovana, the beauty of Lovište, and the excitement of the windsurfing scene.

You can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Peljesac

My one day on Pelješac was a whirlwind of beauty, history, and delicious food. It was a reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that are squeezed into a short amount of time.

It left me wanting more, and I know that I will be back to explore this incredible corner of Croatia again. And I hope that this guide will inspire you to do the same.

Whether you have a day, a week, or a month, Pelješac is a place that will capture your heart.
