Travelling solo as a Black woman comes with its own set of unique experiences and challenges, but few destinations are as welcoming and enriching as the vibrant city of Dakar, Senegal. I, Miki, had an unforgettable journey through Dakar, drawn back for the fourth time by its artistic vibrancy and profound sense of hospitality. What keeps me returning is more than just the landscape; it’s the way the city embraces you with the spirit of ‘teranga’, a Wolof term that encapsulates the hospitality and warmth you feel at every turn.
A City Pulsing with Art and Creativity
Dakar is renowned for its dynamic and trendsetting art and cultural scene, offering a rich tapestry of experiences that are deeply interwoven with the daily life of its inhabitants. My recent visit coincided with the Dak’Art Biennale, Africa’s preeminent art festival, which gathers art enthusiasts from around the globe to celebrate the continent’s contemporary creations. Even though the official event faced last-minute postponements, unofficial exhibitions thrived in alternative venues, from The Third to Galerie Cécile Fakhoury, pulsating with creativity that celebrates Africa’s talented diaspora.
This feast for the senses is not limited to structured exhibits. In Dakar, art is everywhere, from street corners adorned with murals to lively markets buzzing with handcrafted jewelry and art. It’s a city that breathes creativity, making it impossible not to engage with photographers, artists, and designers who define its cultural landscape.

It’s palpable in the shared laughter over a meal of thieboudienne – Senegal’s signature dish of seasoned fish and rice – or in the ease of conversation with strangers that quickly turn into friends.
