Paris Leads Global City Rankings for Fifth Consecutive Year
In a remarkable achievement, Paris has been crowned the world’s top city for the fifth consecutive year by Euromonitor International. The latest Top 100 City Destinations Index sees the City of Light retaining its preeminent position, largely thanks to its robust infrastructure, dynamic tourism strategies, and iconic cultural appeal.
The French capital’s consistent top-ranking status is attributed to several factors. One of these is the reopening of the illustrious Notre Dame Cathedral, which occurred earlier this year, sparking renewed interest among global visitors. Moreover, the recent triumph of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), who clinched the Champions League title, attracted a throng of football enthusiasts, bolstering the city’s tourism numbers.
The index, which evaluates cities based on a variety of criteria including tourism, sustainability, and economic performance, continues to highlight Europe’s dominance. This year’s list sees notable entries from the continent, with Madrid securing the second spot, followed by Rome at fourth and Milan rounding out the top five. Amsterdam and Barcelona also feature prominently, ranking seventh and eighth respectively.
On the other side of the spectrum, London has experienced a significant decline in its ranking. Previously positioned in the top ten, the UK capital now sits at 18th place. Despite scoring well for its tourism infrastructure, London has lagged in areas like tourism policy and sustainability, impacting its overall standing.
Asia-Pacific cities have also shown strong performances, with Tokyo securing the third position on the index. The Japanese capital is investing heavily in its Narita International Airport, with expansion projects aimed at doubling its passenger capacity by 2039. Singapore and Seoul also feature in the top ten, underscoring a robust tourism surge in the region.
New York stands as the sole American city in the prestigious top ten, maintaining its sixth-place ranking. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has ascended to 13th place following major advancements in tourism infrastructure and events such as the upcoming addition of a new theme park at Universal Orlando Resort.
Aside from the top-ranked cities, Bangkok has outpaced its peers in attracting international visitors, leading the global rankings for foreign arrivals with over 30 million expected visits in 2025. Other cities attracting large numbers of international tourists include Hong Kong, London, and Macao, with each city drawing several millions.
A significant trend highlighted in the report is the shift from sheer volume-based tourism to strategies focusing on high-value visitation. Many cities are now prioritizing travelers who contribute more to the local economy and engage in sustainable tourism practices. This dynamic shift is in response to rising security concerns and the pressures of overtourism and inflation, prompting reviews in entry protocols globally.
Looking ahead, destinations like the EU and Japan are planning changes to travel authorization systems and visa fees to align with modern travel trends, aiming to enhance the visitor experience while managing tourism impacts effectively.
As cities worldwide reevaluate their tourism strategies, Paris remains a beacon of successful city planning and tourism management, setting the standard for global urban destinations.
