Taking a Marriage Sabbatical: A Journey of Solo Discovery in New York

Taking a Break for Personal Growth: My Solo Journey to New York

Exploring the world on your own can be an enlightening way to rediscover oneself, and New York seemed like the perfect setting for such an adventure. This is the story of my solo journey, an extended holiday that offered me freedom and reflection, while also allowing for deep reconnection with myself.

## A New Concept

The idea of a “marriage sabbatical” was first introduced to me by an acquaintance. She had experimented with this notion by taking a time apart from her partner—a temporary detachment rather than a full separation—and it reportedly rekindled the love in her marriage. This intriguing concept got me thinking about the possibility of a solo “workacation”, an extended trip sans spouse, purely for personal rejuvenation.

Since the age of 22, I’ve been in a committed relationship and eventually got married to an amazing partner. While the thought of life without him seems unimaginable, there simmered a desire within me for an adventure that was just my own—a desire to rediscover the joys of solo travel and to reconnect with my innermost self.

I cherished the small escapes I gifted myself, taking short breaks from my daily grind for some quiet time to think and recharge. Now, I longed for a more profound experience—an extensive break that allowed me to truly dwell in solitude and explore who I was without familial or societal expectations.

## Deciding to Take the Leap

I initially shared my feelings with my husband over breakfast, expressing a cautious eagerness for a solo venture. Contrary to my fears of misunderstanding and potential conflict, he responded with nothing but supportive encouragement. His calm assurance allayed my apprehensions and beckoned me to plunge into the journey with enthusiasm rather than hesitation.

As fate would have it, a serendipitous opportunity presented itself when a friend offered her Brooklyn apartment for a month-long sublet at a reduced price. It was the perfect chance I needed to turn my aspirations into reality. New York, with its boundless energy and inspiring charm, came highly recommended.

## The Big Apple Call

New York is a city like no other. It was a place that promised endless engagement with its vivacious atmosphere and a vibe that resonated intimately with my creative spirit. From the bagel shops frequented on lazy mornings to the vibrant parks, bustling with life, it was everything I imagined and more.

While there, I met many incredible women, all on their paths of self-discovery, which deepened my appreciation for these new connections tremendously. I reconnected with old acquaintances, engaged in heartfelt conversations over coffee, and participated in vibrant book discussions. Each gathering enriched my experience, fulfilled my craving for inspiration, and ignited the liveliness I had so dearly missed.

## Embracing Freedom

The autonomy of my daily schedule was liberating. Freed from the collaborative agency of a traveling companion, I attended events and explored niches of the city that catered solely to my interests. I found joy in the solitude, relishing the precious time spent with myself and the city. Yet, underlying the blissful independence was a continual fondness for the life I shared with my husband.

As my recollection bank burgeoned, so did my appreciation for home. Browsing through pictures of shared spaces and loved ones back home, my fondness grew, crystallizing the love and joy in my comfortable routine life. This articulation of absence highlighted how the time away had only strengthened our relationship.

## A Lesson in Balance

Returning from New York left a feeling that my personal revelations complemented my married life. I came away with cherished memories—the impromptu penthouse parties, serendipitous countryside escapades, the thrill of Broadway evenings, and the peaceful nights under the city sky. These experiences had invigorated a quiet contentment within me.

Life often compels us to compartmentalize or choose between personal aspirations and relationship commitments. My journey made me realize such binary thought isn’t necessary. It is possible to enrich personal independence while maintaining one’s cherished partnerships. This adventure in New York showed me how beautifully these worlds can coexist, and sometimes, it’s not about choosing one over the other, but rather allowing them both to flourish harmoniously.
